0.22 μm PES syringe filters are single-use sterile membrane filters used to clarify and sterilise laboratory solutions before storage or further research. The 0.22 μm pore size is the laboratory standard for sterile filtration of aqueous solutions, while the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane is widely preferred for peptide and protein work because of its low protein binding, fast flow rate and excellent compatibility with aqueous solutions.

Why use PES syringe filters?

Sterile filtration is commonly performed to improve solution quality before transferring peptides into a sterile storage vial.

PES syringe filters are widely used because they:

remove most bacteria and particulate contaminants
minimise peptide adsorption with a low protein-binding membrane
provide fast filtration of aqueous solutions
are individually packed to maintain sterility
are compatible with standard Luer syringes

Why choose a PES membrane?

Several membrane materials are available for syringe filters, but PES (polyethersulfone) has become one of the preferred choices for peptide research.

Compared with many alternatives, PES offers:

low peptide and protein binding
high flow rates
excellent compatibility with aqueous peptide solutions
broad chemical compatibility with buffers and saline solutions

Common laboratory applications

0.22 μm PES syringe filters are commonly used for:

sterile filtration of reconstituted peptide solutions
filtration of bacteriostatic water and buffered saline solutions
clarification of laboratory reagents
preparation of sterile research samples
transfer of filtered solutions into sterile storage vials

Typical filtration workflow

A typical laboratory workflow includes:

Reconstitute the peptide using sterile technique.
Draw the solution into a sterile syringe.
Attach a sterile 0.22 μm PES syringe filter.
Filter the solution into a new sterile vial.
Store the filtered solution under appropriate conditions.

Using a new sterile filter for each solution helps minimise cross-contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a 0.22 μm filter?

A 0.22 μm membrane is the accepted laboratory standard for sterile filtration because it removes most bacteria and particulate contaminants from aqueous solutions.

Why is PES recommended for peptides?

PES membranes exhibit low protein binding, helping minimise peptide loss during filtration while maintaining high flow rates.

Will filtration remove the peptide?

No. Dissolved peptide molecules are far smaller than the 0.22 μm pore size and pass through the membrane. The filter is designed to retain bacteria and particulate matter rather than dissolved compounds.

Can one filter be reused?

No. Syringe filters are designed for single-use laboratory applications. A new sterile filter should be used for each solution.

Can these filters be used with bacteriostatic water and buffered saline?

Yes. PES membranes are compatible with bacteriostatic water, phosphate buffered saline and most aqueous peptide solutions.

Is this product intended for human use?

No. These syringe filters are supplied exclusively for laboratory and analytical research. They are not intended for human consumption, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease.
