Descripción
NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a naturally occurring coenzyme found in every living cell. Rather than acting as a signalling peptide or hormone, NAD+ functions as an essential electron carrier in hundreds of metabolic reactions, playing a central role in ATP production, mitochondrial function and cellular repair.
Because NAD+ levels naturally decline with age and metabolic stress, it has become one of the most extensively investigated molecules in research on aging, energy metabolism and mitochondrial biology.
Why NAD+ is widely investigated
Published research has investigated NAD+ in relation to:
- cellular energy production
- mitochondrial function
- healthy aging
- DNA repair
- oxidative stress
- metabolic health
- cognitive function
- muscle physiology
- sirtuin biology
Unlike mitochondrial peptides, NAD+ serves as a fundamental metabolic cofactor required for normal cellular function across virtually every tissue.
How NAD+ works
Cellular energy production
NAD+ plays a central role in converting nutrients into usable cellular energy. It transfers electrons during glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, allowing mitochondria to generate ATP efficiently.
Mitochondrial function
Healthy mitochondria depend on adequate NAD+ availability to support normal energy metabolism. Research has investigated how declining NAD+ levels influence mitochondrial performance during aging and metabolic stress.
DNA repair
NAD+ serves as an essential substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair, including PARPs, which respond to DNA damage by helping maintain genomic stability.
Sirtuin activation
NAD+ is also required by sirtuins, a family of enzymes involved in cellular stress responses, metabolism and healthy aging. This relationship has made NAD+ a central focus of longevity research.
Why NAD+ is different from mitochondrial peptides
Although frequently discussed together, NAD+, SS-31 and MOTS-c investigate different aspects of mitochondrial biology.
NAD+ supplies an essential coenzyme required for cellular energy metabolism.
SS-31 investigates mitochondrial membrane integrity and ATP production.
MOTS-c studies metabolic signalling and adaptive cellular responses.
Together, these represent complementary areas of cellular energy research rather than competing mechanisms.
Investigación humana y preclínica
NAD+ has been investigated extensively in both laboratory and clinical settings.
Current research explores its role in aging, metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular physiology and mitochondrial disease. Much of this work also focuses on strategies to increase intracellular NAD+ through precursors such as NMN and nicotinamide riboside, reflecting the importance of NAD+ homeostasis in human physiology.
Although the biological importance of NAD+ is well established, many therapeutic applications remain under active investigation.
Published safety observations
As a naturally occurring cellular coenzyme, NAD+ has been the subject of extensive biological research.
Clinical investigations have generally reported favourable tolerability across a range of study designs, although research continues to evaluate optimal delivery methods, pharmacokinetics and potential applications in age-related disease.

Molecular weight: 665.4
NAD+ is supplied as a lyophilised vial and should be handled using standard peptide reconstitution procedures appropriate to the research setting. Must be reconstituted with agua bacteriostática antes de usar.
